Drinking after work can help Advance your Career

by: Nate Dawg

Feel like your not going anywhere at your job, maybe your not spending enough time in the bar.  How is that you ask?   The bar, where else can you pull up a stool next to those “White Collar” execs in the big corner offices and order a bud.  Everyone is at the same level.

Think about it, what better way to say you’re a “Team Player” then to hang out with the team and talk a little shop.  It’s the camaraderie that is going to help you in the long run with management and advancing your career.   Let’s face it, if your hanging around the coworkers you are bound to pick up on some “insider” info on the company, the industry, and gain the edge that may make you better then the person that doesn’t show up at all.  Besides you can usually find out who Betty in Accounting is sleeping with this week.

Ok lets say that hanging out with co-workers and the boss isn’t your thing.  It’s better for you and your career if you show up and leave then to not show up at all.   I usually make it a goal to at least walk in, say "hi" to everyone and walk out the back.  Everyone saw you there, but you didn’t get stuck spending the rest of the night there.

What if you’re the partier?  Well keep a leash on your craziness while your in the company of your boss and co workers.   It may be cool that you’re the fun one, but when you half naked on the bar singing a karaoke version of “Take this job and Shove it,” it’s not likely that you will be employed long.  If you find your self getting out of control you best bet is to go home before it happens.

So drink, mingle, and get ahead…
